THE LAST SONG ON EARTH

A protest against climate change inaction, the video is a traditional hand drawn frame per frame animation that follows a plethora of clueless party people, dancing and chanting till the very end, unaware of the presence of a black toxic substance that threatens to drown them all.

DIRECTOR BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Gaia Alari is a filmmaker, moving image artist and animator of short films and music videos (in traditional 2d hand drawn frame per frame animation) based in Milan, Italy

Since 2011, in parallel with her academic studies in Medicine, she pursued drawing and illustration as a self taught.
Her early works have been published on LaMono Magazine, Cruzine, INeedAGuide, HiFructose.

In 2015, she abandoned her illustrative works to pursue artistic projects, collaborating traditionally with art galleries all over Europe (in particular Galleri Benoni, Copenhagen, Denmark, and Galerie Anouk Le Bourdiec, Paris, France)

Inspired by the works of artists as William Kentridge, Nathalie Djurberg and Lauren Kelley, as well as contemporary cinema and filmmakers, since 2018 she has been dedicating exclusively to creating and directing experimental music videos and short films with the technique of clay animation and, since 2020, in traditional hand drawn frame per frame animation, usually as a one woman crew.
She regularly collaborates with international musicians and labels: Shaina Taub / Atlantic Records (Warner USA), Lake Street Dive / Nonesuch Records (Warner USA), Ada Lea / SaddleCreek +Nextdoor Records (USA, Canada), Dana Gavanski / Full Time Hobby + Flemish Eye Records + Ba Da Bing! Records (UK, Canada, USA) , The Holydrug Couple / Sacred Bones, Low Cut Connie / Contender Records (USA), Casper Skulls / Outside music + Nexdoor Records (Canada).
Amongst her commercial works, she creates original ltd products in partnership with Quotamine (Paris based skate crew and brand), also animating the intro of the brand’s debut skate film Didier, premiered in 2019 at Converse HQ in Paris.

She directed and animated a legacy video in partnership with YOOX – NET – A – PORTER on the occasion of YOOX founder, Federico Marchetti, retirement from the Group.

Her animated music clip “I talk to the wind” for Dana Gavanski made it to the official selection of Sound Unseen film and music festival, 21st edition (in the 25 coolest film festival of the world list by MovieMaker Magazine), received a nomination for Best Music Video at San Francisco Frozen Film Festival and was shortlisted in the official selection of the 48th Athens International Film Festival (AIFVF), an Academy Awards and Canadian Screen Awards qualifying festival.

In 2021 she was interviewed by the Drawing department at the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Lisbon alongside Koji Yamamura.
