With the Career Award 2026, Imaginaria – International Festival of Auteur Animation Cinema honours Joanna Quinn for a career built entirely by hand, film after film, with an unmistakable graphic style and a vision that fuses fierce wit with deep humanity. Her characters — above all Beryl, rebellious factory worker and unrivalled anti-heroine — have transformed animation into a tool of social critique and female liberation, winning festivals, academies and hearts around the world.
Biography
Drawing as a mother tongue
Joanna Quinn was born in 1962 in Birmingham, England, and grew up in North London. After studying Graphic Design at Middlesex University and completing a foundation course at Goldsmiths College, University of London, she discovered animation as a natural extension of her extraordinary talent for drawing — a fast, expressive line capable of capturing movement and character in just a few strokes.
In 1987 she completed her first film, Girls Night Out, which won three prizes at the Annecy Festival and introduced the world to Beryl: a middle-aged factory worker, bodily, irreverent, and irresistibly human. Beryl became one of the most iconic characters in European animation, a symbol of unpretentious, grassroots feminism. That same year Quinn co-founded the independent studio Beryl Productions in Wales with her partner Les Mills — producer, writer, and sound designer.
Her filmography is built slowly and with artisanal precision: every film is animated entirely by hand, on paper, in a deliberate rejection of digital mediation in favour of the physical mark. Body Beautiful (1990), Britannia (1993), Famous Fred (1996), The Wife of Bath (1998), Dreams and Desires – Family Ties (2006), and most recently Affairs of the Art (2021): each work adds a new dimension to her visual universe, alternating fierce comedy, social critique, and unexpected tenderness.
Her international recognition is extraordinary: over a hundred awards, four BAFTAs, two Emmys, three Oscar nominations — the most recent for Affairs of the Art in 2022. In 2013 ASIFA International named her Animation Laureate, the world’s highest distinction for a career dedicated to animation. She is an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Art in London and the University of Wales, and an Honorary Doctor of Middlesex University and the University of Wolverhampton. She is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
Joanna Quinn is one of the most original and consistent voices in world animation: faithful to hand-drawn work when everything pushed towards digital, faithful to her characters when the market demanded otherwise, faithful to a vision of the world that knows how to laugh without ever stopping to think.
